The above Springfield (pictured before cleaning) is a company "loaner". The last person to use this rifle didnt clean it after firing and..... left it out in the rain, then brought it back weeks later and left it in the Captains garage!

1/26/06 I am working on an original Enfield to replace broken lock parts. Will be a fine rifle when its repaired..I will post a picture.

MUSKET CARE TIPS-

Always use a good penetrating oil. Contrary to popular thinking...don't use WD-40. It is not designed to penetrate and evaporates quickly leaving your firearm unprotected and ready to rust!

Military Gun grease can be found in inexpensive small tins at Army Surplus stores. My favorite is M60 machine gun grease which I use on the cone threads and lock.

NATURAL LUBRICANTS- Beef tallow (you can use a piece of Bacon fat) is probably the most authentic rust preventative. If you useThompson Center's Natural Lube 1000 Plus Bore Butter it will eventually "season" the bore and make your gun a little easier to clean in the future.

CAMP SPARKLE- mix a little bit of camp ashes and water to form a paste (yup they did it in '63) on a patch to remove rust and clean your metal parts on the OUTSIDE. Dont put this on your stock or in your barrel. Also a piece of leather carried in your ol haversack will shine up your lock and barrel as well. Another thing that will shine 'er up is to rub it with a piece of burlap!

YEARLY MAINTAINANCE- At least once a year the lock should be removed, cleaned and a heavy "protecting" grease applied. Water from cleaning seeps behind the lock and will rust it if not maintainted.
